Mick McCallum
2016 WINNER
Mick is in his second year at the Kangan Institute in Melbourne enrolled in a Cert III in Automotive Body Repair. He works for Steven Alldrick at the Deluxe Rod Shop.
As Mick said in his application “My main interest is with HotRods and Custom cars/street machines. I’ve grown up my whole life surrounded by cars, as kids we were always going to rod runs and show and shines on weekends in Dad’s 34 plymouth. In 2012 I completed 2 weeks of work experience at Deluxe Rod Shop with Steven Alldrick. For the next 2 years I spent every school holidays working with Steven before starting my apprenticeship in 2014. Shortly after starting my apprenticeship I started building a steel 33 Ford Roadster after hours at work with the guidance of Steven.
”Through taking on such a project I’ve been able to extend my knowledge as most of the car, apart from the body itself has been hand built. This has allowed me to design and fabricate each component to suit my taste. Being able to design a component and then fabricate it to suit a certain purpose and have it work is what I get the most satisfaction from. I really enjoy being able to use my hands to fabricate something that I can look at at the end of the day and have something to show for myself. I really enjoy what I do for a living and I think it helps alot when you have a passion for what you do.”
Mick hopes that by winning the Scholarship he would like to have his roadster on display at Summernats as he believes this would be a great way to show his workmanship as well as creativeness and engineering.
